Today Dr. Benny Shao spoke on vision therapy and concussions. Concussions are a type of brain injury which occurs when the victim’s brain slams into the inner walls of the skull due to some sort of impact. The goal today is to share some information about what type of problems a concussion can lead to and also to share an example of a successfully treated patient. Concussion patients can often experience light sensitivity, disorientation, balance issues, double vision, and even digestive problems as a result of the brain injury. Our successfully treated patient claims that prior to treatment, she felt a pressure on her eyes as if they were ready to pop like a balloon! After treatment with a type of light therapy called Syntonic phototherapy, much of the physical discomfort, such as light sensitivity, pain in the eyes, etc., were resolved. She also underwent conventional vision therapy to get the eyes to work together again so as to eliminate her double vision. Our patient was excited enough about her experience that she went on to share her story on Dr. Shao’s Yelp page.
The main point of sharing this story is that many of the symptoms that concussion patients experience aren’t familiar to many doctors. And since they externally don’t exhibit any injury and the damage to the brain doesn’t show up on CT scans or MRIs, their complaints are often dismissed by their doctors. This is extremely frustrating for the concussion patient because they know that they are not able to function as well as they used to but they aren’t able to prove that something is wrong with them. It is Dr. Shao’s hope that sharing this story will allow these individuals to get the help they need. Dr. Benny Shao is a board certified developmental optometrist practicing in west San Jose and Fremont.
